Drain Cleaning Plumbing Coupon

It’s hard to estimate how many calls we get to clean out drains in a given year in Provo and surrounding areas.

Almost every clogged drain we see has already had Draino or some other over-the-counter treatment that didn’t work. While cleaners can work in some circumstances, we always caution customers to be very careful using them. Some have caustic agents like lye and hydrochloric acid that can corrode older pipes and damage newer PVC pipes. Worse, if they splash into your eyes or come in contact with your skin, you could need more than a plumber’s services.

Skip the Commercial Drain Cleaners

It’s safer for pipes and septic systems if you skip the drain cleaners. Use a plunger to bring up the clog. If plunging doesn’t work, try this process:

  1. Run hot (but not boiling) water down the drain for a few minutes.
  2. Put half a cup of baking soda into the drain and let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Pour in a mixture of 1 cup each of vinegar and hot water and cover with a drain plug for about 10 minutes.
  4. Remove the plug and flush with hot water.

Note: Don’t attempt plunging or using this home remedy if you’ve already tried a commercial drain cleaner.

When drain cleaners or home solutions like the one above do work, it’s because the problem has been a buildup of grease and other organic matter. They won’t work, however, on buildups caused by an object stuck in the drain or severe buildup. In this case, you need to have the drain trap cleaned out or replaced. Whatever is causing your drainage problem, the professions at American Plumbing will get you flowing again. We promise!

Drain Cleaning with Hydro-Jetting in Provo, Utah

If the problem appears to be a blockage further down the line, you a drain snake service may be what’s called for. American Plumbing Services provides traditional drain snaking or hydro jetting, the new industry standard to clean out drains. This process—also called hydro scrubbing—uses a very high water pressure hose to dissolve grease, debris and blockages beyond the drain trap. It’s a similar concept to power washing. At very high pressure, hydro jets can even eliminate tree roots that have crept into exterior lines.

Hydro jetting is the most thorough method to clean out sewer lines and pipes. Snaking punches a hold through blockages that may or may not get washed away. It is still a viable option but hydro jetting delivers a fuller drain clean. Call American Plumbing Services to evaluate your stubborn clog and recommend the most appropriate treatment option.
